An Introduction to my Counselling Practice

I was introduced to counselling and psychotherapy when after a time of great spiritual turbulence and confusion a kind friend recommended psychotherapy could be worth a try. I was going through a period of intense desperation and felt that I had nothing to lose.

The idea of paying for help has often seemed strange to me; an uncomfortable facet of capitalist society and a broken world. Surely, I have always felt, helping others is a natural instinct all compassionate people have and not something that should be monetised. However, we unavoidably do live in a capitalist society and therapists have their bills to pay, and I attended psychotherapy for around two years paying my therapist £40 for an hour-long weekly session. It was absolutely worth the investment.

The healing I experienced in psychotherapy changed my life dramatically. I grew as a person in ways I had never considered were possible. I learned a great deal about emotions—what they are and how to express them—and became much more self-confident and mentally stable.

My experience of mental health difficulties has involved receiving a diagnosis of a mental health condition, suffering several admissions to psychiatric hospital, taking a variety of medications, and attending counselling and psychotherapy with various therapists practicing a range of disciplines. Because of all of these experiences I am able to offer a depth of empathy to people suffering mental distress that not all therapists can.

The training I received to become a counsellor was highly unconventional, in that I went through a weeks-long process of being trained directly by my Lord and Father, Almighty God. I had gone through a period of years in which He had used me in social circumstances to influence the healing of others, and in 2023 He led me through an experience of training which involved counselling others in a hospital setting. Additionally, through several decades of lived experience of the mental health system I have developed a range of ‘tools’ which I am now able to use to benefit others.

While the primary purpose of my counselling practice is to facilitate healing and wellbeing, it is the experience of drawing closer to God which I most fervently aspire to facilitate for my clients. After all, all healing ultimately comes from God.

In my sessions, clients come with whatever issues they are currently facing in life, and hopefully leave having partially or fully resolved those issues. This might mean the hope of a better relationship, healing from an ailment, the relief of stress, an experience of peace, or a divine encounter. But the possibilities are endless.

I hope that you will not feel afraid to reach out to me if you are struggling. My approach to counselling is formal and professional, but also compassionate and flexible, and you certainly do not have to commit to regular sessions unless you feel comfortable doing so.
