I remember having a fascinating spiritual experience after experimenting with a psychedelic substance during my undergraduate studies at the University of Westminster. I laughed continually for a period of hours, had some stimulating interactions with the people and objects around me, and the session reached a kind of climax when I stood looking into a mirror. I seemed to become my reflection, an experience which made me think deeply about what it means to be human. Little did I know at the time that the mirror would later come to symbolise and categorise my approach to professional counselling.
Mirrors. They reflect light. Human beings are, in a sense, conduits of divine light. When we look out through our eyes this divine light illuminates the objects that we perceive, giving us our visual awareness.
In Hindu philosophy, the ‘lila’ or ‘play’ that God manifests is an illusion. We are all rather like puppets in a grand game that God is unfolding. The state of spiritual enlightenment is described as ‘sat-chit-ananda’, or ‘experience-consciousness-bliss’. This is an expression that can be interpreted in different ways, but to me it encapsulates the supreme delight of humanity – communion with God while in a human body. While the experience of regular creaturely consciousness is awesome yet lacking, an experience of divine consciousness is perfection itself. Is there anything greater worth striving for?
Do not be afraid. God loves you where you are right now.
While the primary purpose of my counselling practice is to facilitate healing and wellbeing, it is the experience of drawing closer to God which I most fervently aspire to facilitate for my clients. In my sessions, clients come with whatever issues they are currently facing in life, and leave having partially or fully resolved those issues. For some, this means a better relationship, healing from an ailment, the relief of stress, an experience of peace, or a divine encounter. But the possibilities are endless.
Before attending a session, perhaps ask yourself this question: What is my greatest need right now?
Stop. Take a few deep breaths, and prepare for transformation.
You’re not just going to get better. You’re going to get better, and better, and better.
I look forward to meeting with you ❤️
